The Old Memorial School, Drumclog
The inscription plaque on this building states "On the battlefield of Drumclog, this Seminary of Education was erected, in memory of those Christian Heroes, who on Sabath the 1st of June 1679 nobly fought, in defence of Civil and Religious Liberty". And a new battle is ongoing! There is a proposal to use the building as a centre for the rehabilitation of young offenders. See other photo in this square.

As seen elsewhere (e.g. Image) the memorial commemorates the victory of a group of Covenanters over the royalist troops of Graham of Claverhouse, on 1 June 1679. Also visible across the field is the Memorial School (Image), apparently now a private house.

Memorial to the Battle of Drumclog
This monument commemorates the last great victory of the Covenanters on 1st June 1679 over government forces led by John Graham of Claverhouse ('Bonny Dundee'). However, three weeks later the Covenanters were routed a few miles away at the Battle of Bothwell Brig. The Covenanters were supporters of the National Covenant, drawn up in February 1638 against the attempt by King Charles I and Archbishop Laud to impose a new liturgy and prayer book upon the Church of Scotland.
