Steam engine at Cowper Tannery, Olney
W H Allen Sons & Co Ltd compound engine built in 1948 and stopped c1986. Now for sale at Preston Steam Services near Canterbury. The cylinders are 12" & 18" bore by 7.5" stroke with piston valves. It developed 150 brake horsepower at 500 revolutions per minute on steam at 100 pounds per square inch. The flywheel is 42" diameter and the engine is direct coupled to an alternator. The device in the bottom right corner is the DC exciter to supply the field coils of the alternator. The original colour slide is dark and this is better in monochrome.
