The tourist information centre occupies this building in the centre of Bedford. The Santa Claus icons in the windows indicated that the centre was selling charity Christmas cards, although Christmas was still two months away when this photo was taken.

This used to be the Town Hall, until a modern office block was built beside it. This part dates from 1767, and up to 1892 it housed The Grammar School, which then moved along Harpur Street and became Bedford Modern School (see Image]). In the niche above the doorway is a statue of Sir William Harpur (c1496 - 1574) a merchant from Bedford who became Lord Mayor of London. Through purchases of land in the City of London he was able to found a charity, the Harpur Trust, which today governs 5 public schools in Bedford. See Image]

Inscription below the statue of Sir William Harpur
See Image] Ecce Viator! CORPOREA Effigies GULIELMI HARPUR, Equitis Aurati. Scholae istius Quam cernis amplam et ornatam Munificentissimi Fundatoris Si ANIMOE Picturam spectare velis In Charta Beneficiorum invenias Deliniatam. If I had paid more attention to the Latin I learned when I was at the school of which he was the benefactor, I could give you a translation. The first 2 words are "Behold traveller!".
