Fenny Stratford signalbox and station, 1991
View westward, towards Bletchley: ex-LNWR (Oxford) - Bletchley - Bedford - (Cambridge) line. This is the surviving section, between Bletchley and Bedford, of the formerly - and still potentially - important 'Varsity Line', which survived the 'Beeching Axe', the rest being closed 1/1/68. Although there were modern road barriers at this Simpson Road level-crossing, in 1991 they may still have been controlled from the signalbox, but the latter was since removed when the signalling was modernised. The single-platform 'station' seen ahead remains in use, albeit unstaffed, even though it is only a mile away from Bletchley station.

Fenny Stratford: Simpson Road level crossing
The single track Bedford to Bletchley railway crosses Simpson Road here, just to the east of Fenny Stratford station. The level crossing was the scene of a terrible accident that happened during the evening of 7 December 1925 when a full 14-seater motor coach conveying a party of Wesleyan church worshippers back to Woburn Sands from Bletchley ran into and crashed through the level crossing gates that were closed for a train to pass by, and was immediately struck by the train, on the passenger service from Bedford to Bletchley. Six coach passengers died at the scene, two more and one of the coach drivers died later in hospital. Fortunately the train was slowing down to stop at the station and nobody on the train was badly injured.

Grand Union Canal: Bridge Number 95A
A northbound narrowboat goes under the Bedford to Bletchley railway bridge, Number 95A, on its way to Fenny Stratford Lock. The bridge was built in 1846 by the London to Birmingham Railway, but is known today as the Marston Vale Line. The large pipe crossing is in front of the railway bridge and separate from it.
