This western view of the church is the public one. The outside of the 13th century chancel with its eleven lancet windows is only visible from the private garden of The Priory next door.

St Mary and St Nicholas, Chetwode
The east window is one of the finest survivals of its early Gothic type, five stepped lancets with slender shafts flanking them. The Gothic revival architect George Gilbert Scott (1811-78) whose father was rector of Gawcott nearby, cited this church and these "five noble lancets" as an inspiration for his career.

North wall in St Mary & St Nicholas, Chetwode
The current church is the chancel of a former priory church which became a cell of Notley, near Long Crendon. It was granted to the parish of Chetwode to replace their decayed parish church well before the dissolution. There were two small chapels either side of which only the north one, through this arch, survives, with a floor several steps up.
