The footbridge at Higham station
Viewed from the up platform, this view looks down the line towards Strood Tunnel in the distance. The line runs parallel to the course of the Thames & Medway Canal which was opened between Gravesend and Higham in 1801 and fully opened to Strood in 1824. It continued in use until 1934 but had long been usurped and in places replaced by the adjacent railway line which opened in 1845. The canal and railway actually shared Strood Tunnel for a year but in 1846 the canal company sold the tunnel to the South Eastern Railway which filled in the canal and converted the line to double track. The canal towing contractor's home was converted into the ticket office for Higham station. The water-filled line of the old canal can be still seen by looking over the wall on the left hand (down) platform.
Although this is a Southeastern station, only Thameslink trains now stop here. Southeastern trains and High Speeds pass through without stopping.
