The Peace Garden at Aylesford Priory
In 1242 a group of hermits from Mount Carmel were given land to establish a community by a crusader returning from the Holy Land at Aylesford. At the Reformation in 1538, the priory passed from Carmelite ownership into private hands, becoming known as "The Friars". Aylesford was purchased back by the Carmelite Order in 1949 when it came up for sale. Many of the medieval buildings have been restored and a new open-air church has been built on the site of the medieval chapel. This is the Peace Garden which is reached through the Gatehouse. It is possible to freely walk around the site. For a fuller history see https://www.thefriars.org.uk/History
