Old siding at Lenham station
The line from Otford to Maidstone East was opened on 1st June 1874 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. On 1st July 1884 this was extended from Maidstone East to Ashford with intermediate stations opening at Bearsted, Hollingbourne, Harrietsham, Lenham and Charing on the same day. In many ways Lenham is the most interesting of the five stations between Maidstone East and Ashford International as a loop line runs beyond the up platform, and there are various other sidings seen from the platforms. The remains of one old siding can be seen here next to the western part of the down platform and at one stage there was a bay platform there. A rail training centre is alongside the approach road and young trainees in their new hard hats and high visibility tops can be seen out and about around the station. Within the training centre are practice rail tracks. A new footbridge at Lenham replaced the life-expired concrete footbridge spanning the tracks here, and was completed in early 2010.

Lenham station by night
Saturday evening, 8pm and an eastbound train enters an almost deserted station. The new green footbridge shown here is now the only one: compare my previous view of the station in 2009 Image which shows both old and new footbridges.
