Dutch barges on the Medway
The further large barge is the 'Fortuna', built in 1907 of riveted iron and used commercially until 1984. It is 110 feet long and 20 wide, of the 'Kempenaar' type. All this information and more is on a placard in the wheelhouse window. The nearer small vessel has 'Groningen' twice on the stern, probably the name rather than the port of registration. The 'Fortuna' obviously fits through Allington Lock, although snugly on the beam, but cannot go through the higher Medway locks which are a good deal smaller.

Boats on the River Medway
This is on the Medway Valley Walk, just past Allington Lock and the Malta Inn, heading towards Maidstone. Allington Castle is on the other side of the river here but can only briefly be glimpsed.

The Malta Inn on the River Medway
Proceeding inland on the Medway from Rochester you reach Allington Lock, above which the river is non-tidal. The Malta Inn is adjacent. This was taken from the lock, across the river from the pub.
