Fremlin Walk, Maidstone
This new development in Maidstone town centre is really quite pleasant as these places go. Open to the sky but with partially covered space next to the buildings and the rotunda which provides some seating under a large roof with open sides and stone paving throughout which follows the undulations of the ground as you walk up towards week Street. It also manages to open out this area of the town bringing the Museum and Art Gallery into the town centre. On the other hand many of the shops have moved here from Week Street where they have been replaced with the anything-for-a-pound type of establishment and there are few if any independent stores within the precinct.

Fremlin Walk
Opened in 2005 this shopping centre was built on the site of the old Fremlins brewery and has helped to make Maidstone one of the top 50 shopping towns in the country. I wonder how long it will be before it gets a roof.

Fremlin Walk from St Faith's Street
Station Road becomes St Faith's Street as it sweeps round the corner by the entrance to Brenchley Gardens (right). The 18th century building on the left is the alms houses, next to that the rotunda of the 21st century Fremlin Walk which towers above the building which used to be the Royal Albion Inn.
