Looking west along the High Street
In the foreground is one of the items that featured in Maidstone's 2013 Christmas decorations. Beyond it is the drinking fountain that was presented to the town by Alexander Randall, a successful Maidstone banker; it supports a statue of Queen Victoria. It is said to be the last work of the sculptor John Thomas and was erected, after his death, in about 1862. Beyond it, on the left, is the town hall that was built in 1762/3 to serve both as the town hall and also as the county magistrates court.
