Restoration House and garden [9]
An interesting sculpture in the garden. Restoration House is a large town house, possibly of late medieval origin. The building appears to be circa 1590s with major remodelling of the facade and interior in the mid 17th century. Much early interior features remain. Still lived in, so no interior photography is allowed. Reputed to be the house in which King Charles II stayed the night of 28th May 1660, the eve of his restoration to the throne. Listed, grade I, with much detail at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1185341 Once having city status, Rochester is a town at the lowest bridging point of the River Medway, some 27½ miles southeast of London. The site has been settled since Neolithic times, but the first bridge was built by the Romans. The town has always been of great strategic importance through its position near the confluence of the River Thames and the River Medway and the mighty Rochester Castle was built to guard the crossing. The town is home to the second oldest cathedral in England.
