Hexagon Tower, Blackley, Manchester
Situated on the banks of the River Irk, This is the home of Avecia Limited, makers of speciality chemicals. Formerly owned by ICI who manufactured dyestuffs here and, in the "old days" often changed the colour of the river! Presumably the name was chosen because of the molecular structure of benzene, an important source of colour in organic chemicals. In benzene six carbon atoms are linked together to form a hexagonal ring shaped like the window openings here!

That Richard Seifert got everywhere. He and his partners designed this in 1971 for ICI as a research building. It stands quite aloof from, and is a startling sight amid, its prevalent bland, low-rise surroundings. The exterior modules are "arrow-shaped, linking together to leave hexagonal windows in deep reveals" (Image]). The benzene ring, foundation for all synthetic dyes, is hexagonal. It is now in multiple occupancy.
