Manchester Ship Canal - Mode Wheel Locks
The last two locks at the Manchester end of the ship canal. The buildings will house the hydraulic pumping machinery to operate the gates and sluices. The entrance to the shorter lock is seen on the left and the longer lock is hidden behind the wall extending to the right.

Manchester Ship Canal, Mode Wheel
The Mode Wheel Locks are the last locks on the Manchester Ship Canal before reaching the Salford/Manchester Docks (now Salford Quays). The two locks lift ships thirteen feet to the level of the Salford basin. Before the Ship Canal was built, there used to be a corn mill at this spot. The mill was water powered and the wheel was called "Maud's Wheel" which over the years has been corrupted into Mode Wheel and used to name the area. Mode Wheel Locks
The gate at the Salford end of the lock is being closed so that water can be let out of the lock. The Mode Wheel Locks are the first locks on the Manchester Ship Canal after leaving the Salford/Manchester Docks (now Salford Quays). The locks drop ships thirteen feet from the level of the Salford basin. It is believed that the name “Mode Wheel” derives from a corn mill which stood on the River Irwell at this spot before the Ship Canal was built. The mill was water powered and the wheel was called "Maud's Wheel" which over the years has been corrupted into Mode Wheel and used to name the area.
