Atherton station - platform view
One of several stations to a similar design on the direct route from Manchester Victoria to Wigan Wallgate, by 1977 Atherton's former Central station was only served by two tracks rather than four. Curiously, it was the centre two which had been retained, though the tracks were originally paired by speed, not direction. This was later changed (see my picture from the late 1980s http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/823680 ), meaning one of the platforms and associated buildings could be demolished, saving maintenance costs.

Atherton railway station
Instantly recognisable even after 35 years, though the cars have changed a bit. See: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1011879. Chimneys have been capped and reduced in height, but the station remained manned on a Saturday afternoon and services were all heavily used.

Atherton railway station, Greater Manchester
Opened in 1888 by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on its line from Manchester to Wigan, Southport and Liverpool. View west towards Wigan Wallgate. Compare with Peter Whatley's photos from a similar position. The station is half the size and woodland has been allowed to appear on either side.

Atherton station from the footbridge
Unusually for the "new" Manchester-Wigan line, Atherton boasted a central island platform and two side platforms. Only the former remains in use. The signal is at clear as the signalbox is usually switched out, the block section then being between Walkden and Crow Nest Junction (Hindley).

Atherton Goods Yard signalbox
The goods yard disappeared 50 years ago and the signalbox has been manned only for the rush-hours and unscheduled diversions for many years. Both it and the signalboxes at Walkden and Crow Nest Junction (Hindley) will disappear under a resignalling scheme planned for 2013.
