Old Milestone by the B5215, Leigh Road, Howe Bridge
Carved stone post by the B5215, in parish of Atherton (Wigan District), Howe Bridge, at entrance to Old Vicarage next to parish church, on South side of road. St Helens stone, erected by the Bolton & St Helens turnpike trust in the 19th century. Re-located and probably re-cut, based on Old-maps. Inscription reads:- ATHERTON {mark} BOLTON 6 ST HELENS 13 Carved pseudo benchmark/mason's mark front middle. Milestone Society National ID: LA_BOSH06

Howe Bridge
A whole village was built at Howe Bridge in the 1870's, for the miners at the nearby coal mines. There are rows of brick built cottages, with shops and a school. The tall building in the photo was the miners' bath house.
