Howe Bridge Mills, Atherton
A large complex of cotton spinning mills developed from the 1870s to the 1920s and remaining in textile production until 1999. Also on site is Unit 1 from 1978 that was probably the only new building for cotton spinning since the 1920s but not distinguishable from other modern industrial buildings.

St. John, Atherton and obelisk
St. Johns built 1879 at a cost of £24,000. Obelisk erected in market place 1781 by Robert Vernon Atherton, rebuilt 1867 and renovated 1960.

Ena Mill, Atherton - chimney
A very complete Edwardian spinning mill built in 1908 of red and yellow brick with terracotta decoration. This is a spectacular survivor that is now in other retail usage. It is a grade II listed building. This shows the top of the intact round brick chimney with oversailing cap. Full height chimneys are now rare in Lancashire.

This site has now been cleared and the positions are based on my earlier submission. Demolition occurred in 2014 and houses now stand on this site.

Ena Mill, Atherton
A very complete Edwardian spinning mill built in 1908 of red and yellow brick with terracotta decoration. This is a spectacular survivor that is now in other retail usage. It is a grade II listed building. This shows the former engine house, boiler house and chimney base in front of the multistorey mill block. The engine house is of a layout that suggests it held a horizontal four cylinder engine with rope drive. Unfortunately I have not found out anything about the engine.
