The tower of St John the Baptist dominates. This is the day when the high street was allowed to start operating after coronavirus lockdown, with non-essential shops allowed to re-open. The busiest shops in this town centre were the sandwich shops.

Atherton obelisk
The structure was erected in 1781 by Robert V. Atherton, was rebuilt in 1867 and was renovated in 1960. It marks the site of an ancient fair, and is Grade 2 listed.
