Castings at Morrisons (2)
Part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail, “Castings at Morrisons” was created by artist Steve des Landes in 2009. According to a plaque fixed next to the work (Image]), “this artwork depicts the rich industrial heritage, historical events and characters from the town of Whitefield”. The artwork consists of two aluminium panels. This one tells the story of the Besses o’th’Barn Band, one of the oldest brass bands in the world. The other panel (Image]) depicts the washer women of the now demolished Lilly Hill Steam Laundry as well as tradesmen, masons and blacksmiths from Whitefield. The other panel. The panels were commissioned by Morrisons PLC and are attached to the wall of their supermarket, facing Bury New Road.
