Manchester Ship Canal, Irlam Container Terminal
Irlam was the first of several planned satellite ports on Manchester Ship Canal. As the canal is not big enough to accommodate modern ocean-going container ships, these are now unloaded at the Port of Liverpool's Royal Seaforth Container Terminal and the containers are transferred to smaller vessels operating regular shuttle services to import/export goods to/from inland without using road haulage. Part of the “Atlantic Gateway” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Gateway_(North_West_England). Some of the shuttles are barges pulled by tugs.
