Irlam railway station, Greater Manchester
Opened in 1873 by the Cheshire Lines Committee on the line from Manchester Central to Liverpool Central via Warrington. In 1893, the old station was demolished and the line moved a few metres to the south, with a new building provided. It was also at a higher level than the original, so as to climb over the Manchester Ship Canal. The original line was behind and to the right of the station building. View west towards Glazebrook and Warrington Central. At the time of this image, the 1893 building was derelict. In 2015, it was renovated and reopened as a public house.

The unusually wide platform is due to relocation of the lines when the Manchester Ship Canal was constructed. For the same scene a decade earlier see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1011930 .
