Brethren Street, Fairfield Moravian Settlement
View from the southern end of Brethren Street. It was a feature of Moravian settlement life in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries that members were grouped into three choirs (ie, communities): married; single brothers; and single sisters. The single brethren would occupy shared accommodation and also work together within the settlement as would the single sisters in their house. (see also

Firemark on House in Fairfield Square
Fire insurance marks were metal plaques marked with the emblem of the insurance company which were affixed to the front of insured buildings as a guide to the insurance company's fire brigade. These identification marks were used in the eighteenth and nineteenth century in the days before municipal fire services were formed. This example (which I think is from the Royal Exchange Company) is affixed to one of the houses in The Square.
