Victorian postbox, Swan Street (near Shudehill)
This Victorian postbox is a large capacity design, used in the period 1889 to 1901. Manufactured by A. Handyside & Co., of Derby & London, whose name appears on the black base. It is nice to think it has been sitting here for maybe 110 to 120 years or so, giving service to the people and businesses nearby. It was a Victorian box similar to this, at the bottom of Market Street, which survived the IRA bomb at the Arndale Centre in 1996, which shows how sturdy these boxes are.
Across the road is, or maybe was, One Stop Insurance, which specialises in taxi insurance.
