Urmston station
A classic Cheshire Lines Committee railway station, still very much in use by British Rail when photographed. However, the building's days as a railway facility were numbered, not least as its position on the Liverpool-bound side of the station was inconvenient for both staff and passengers, the latter being foremost commuters into Manchester using the opposite side of the station. For a 2009 view of the same building, see: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1493469

Urmston Station - Manchester platform
The principal platform in terms of use, but only provided with a minor structure when built. Since 1988, the station facilities have changed completely with a new ticket office provided at street level on this side of the station and the structure shown in the picture replaced with a "greenhouse" design. The train photographed was operating a shuttle service to and from Warrington, the line east from Urmston being shut due to major track and resignalling work around Manchester Piccadilly station.

Urmston Station from the old stairs
Considerable effort was expended to clear the old Manchester-side stairs in late 2010. It's not known whether this will lead to their reinstatement. The current access is adjacent to the booking office visible top right.
