Newton Heath railway station (site), Greater Manchester
Opened in 1853 on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's line from Manchester Victoria to Rochdale, this station closed to passengers in 1966. View north across the sidings of Newton Heath depot. The station's only access appears at one time to have been by a long footbridge. The main line is behind the digger.

Newton Heath station and Down freight out of Manchester, 1962
View SW towards Manchester Victoria on the ex-L&Y main line to West Yorkshire via Todmorden. The Class J freight has an unusually smart ex-WD 2-8-0, No. 90402, which was built by NB Loco as WD No. 78612 and shipped to France in 1/45 for use behind the Armies, returning in 1947, stored at Parkestone Quay for a year or two, then put to work on BR(LMR) as No. 90402, surviving until 4/64.

This railway bridge over St. Mary's Road is decorated with fancy metal arches. It would like rather good with a fresh coat of paint.
