Former Co-operative Department Store, Newton Heath
Until the 1960s, this building was a major Co-op retail store, worth my mother travelling a couple of miles to visit for "outfits". I mainly remember being fascinated by the manually operated lifts, complete with brown-coated attendant. The store was killed by more modern supermarkets and now caters for more basic tastes, judging by the posters.

Newton Silk Mill
Erected in 1832. Silk manufacture continued to be an alternative to cotton spinning throughout the 19th century in Newton Heath, as several of my ancestors' census returns testify.
