Home of the "Binliner"
Rail provides onward transport for much of north Manchester's unrecyclable waste to landfill sites. The trains are known colloquially as "Binliners", a play on the name of the original 1960s nationalised container transport enterprise, Freightliner. The line alongside the depot runs from Manchester to Oldham and Rochdale.

Viridor Black Bin Waste Recycling Unit
The large long silver and brick building on the right is used by Viridor to recycle waste from black bin collections in Manchester. The organic fraction of this waste is treated in their nearby anaerobic digestion plant.

Dean Lane station - the remnants
A single track remains through the station site to serve the refuse compaction plant off Reliance Street, Newton Heath. Although passenger trains were withdrawn from the Oldham loop in October 2009 for it to be downgraded to a tramway, there is after 16 months little evidence of the Metrolink tram stop which is intended to replace Dean Lane.
