Newton Heath Train Maintenance Depot
The depot first opened in 1876 with the coming of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. It now maintains trains for Northern Rail. In 1878, workers in the railway yard formed Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) Football Club to indulged their passion for association football with games against other departments of the LYR or other railway companies. In 1902, the club changed its name to Manchester United.

Seeds of Glory
On this site once stood a recreation ground, provided by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway for their employees. The staff of the locomotive depot, whose roofs are visible in the background, established a football club, named Newton Heath after the local area. Some years later, the club moved location and renamed itself Manchester United. The rest is footballing glory.
