New Development at the Exchange Station Site
Looking from the footbridge at the western end of Manchester Victoria Railway Station towards the new high rise buildings being constructed as part of the development on the site of the former Manchester Exchange Station. The tall building to the left of the construction is the Manchester City Centre Premier Inn hotel. The cathedral tower can also be seen on the left hand edge of the photograph.

Manchester Exchange railway station (site)
Opened in 1884 by the London & North Western Railway on its line from Liverpool to Leeds, this station closed in 1969.
View west from Victoria station towards Salford Central and Liverpool, a few years before electrification. The LNWR had shared the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's Victoria station from 1845 to 1884 but delays and congestion forced them to build their own station. Traffic reverted to Victoria in 1969 but Exchange wasn't demolished until the early 1980s. The station footbridge seen here survived until 2014.
