Now only the new remains
Looking across the A6 Chapel Street towards the Beetham Tower and other new tower blocks in the background. Compare with the view in 2009 Image In the foreground then was Ye Olde Nelson, an ornate building and one of the landmarks of the city, built in 1899 on the site of a pub which had opened for business in 1805, the year Vice Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson died as his fleet defeated the French and Spanish. It was still there in 2015 Image Developers had initially agreed to keeping at least its facade but now it has gone.

"Ye Olde Nelson" in Salford
Originally dating from 1805, the Nelson Tavern was named after Lord Nelson who died at Trafalgar that year. It was re-built in 1899, opened in 1905 and closed for good in 2003. Now it looks set to be wiped off the map completely...with the words of Hazel Blears et al rolling down Chapel Street... "historic buildings and public spaces such as Ye Olde Nelson and Bexley Square will be revitalized and brought back into active use..."
