At Failsworth. The big building on the other side is Morrisons and is on the site of Marlborough No. 2 Mill. The style is a pastiche of mill architecture and even includes an extension in the background that recapitulates a mill engine house with blind arcading instead of windows.

Marlborough No. 1 Mill, Failsworth
In the foreground is the Rochdale Canal. On the left is a Morrisons supermarket styled on a textile mill. The mill with the truncated chimney is Marlborough No. 1 mill. A former cotton spinning mill built in 1905 and by then used a distribution warehouse.

Marlborough No.1 Mill, Failsworth
This mill is a former cotton spinning mill that was built in 1915 to a design by architect PS Stott. The spindleage in 1915 was 114,456. The building closest with the tall arch headed windows was the engine house. This housed a 1700 horsepower George Saxon steam engine. This was an inverted vertical triple expansion engine with cylinders 25", 38" & 60" x 4' stroke. The flywheel was 22' diameter and drove the mill by 40 cotton ropes. The mill closed in 1955 and is now used as a mail order warehouse. The big green tank is probably for fire fighting water.
