The Brown Cow
The Brown Cow was built in 1904 to replace an old beerhouse of the same name in a row of cottages along Oldham Road, Failsworth. In 1929 a wine license was granted and by the start of WWII it was under the ownership of Cornbrook Brewery. The brewery was taken over by Charrington United Breweries who later merged with Bass. Although it has retained its signage Image the pub was converted into residential use some years ago.

Regent Mill, Failsworth - offices
This spinning mill was built in 1906 to the design of G Stott and housed 60,000 ring spindles driven by a Buckley and Taylor inverted vertical triple expansion engine of 1800 horsepower. The cylinders had Corliss valves and were 24", 39" & 63" bores x 4' 6" stroke. It ran at 75 revolutions per minute and drove by 36 ropes from the 26' diameter flywheel. The mill ceased production in 1966 but remains in good condition and in alternative commercial use. This shows the single storey office block next to the entrance to the mill yard. There is sufficient ornamentation to relieve an otherwise plain building. A similar treatment extends to the gate posts.
