Deansgate station
Formerly known as Knott Mill, later Knott Mill & Deansgate, this station was opened with the first portion of the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway on 20 July 1849. The MSJ&A was a joint venture of the London and Birmingham, and the Sheffield, Ashton and Manchester railways, and because these two eventually became part of different 'Big Four' companies, it remained jointly owned right up until nationalisation in 1948. Electrified on 1500V DC in 1931, this was upgraded to 25kV AC in 1971, but in 1992 most of the line (though not Deansgate station) became part of Metrolink, at 750V DC. The line has for very many years been an important part of Manchester's commuter railways.
