The long black shed contains a steam winch used for the slipping of boats. The black smoke indicates that steam is being raised prior to putting the narrowboat back in the water. A fun way to spend a Sunday morning.

Steam winch in action.
This is at the Ashton Packet Boat Co, Guide Bridge and is lowering a narrowboat in to the cut following work. As far as I know this remains in action. It came from a cotton mill where it was used for hoisting bales.
