The heron from the previous picture Image] did not fly away as they usually do. This one turned about and strutted off along the towpath the way we had come.

This heron stood happily on the towpath waiting to have its photo taken as we approached gently on the canal. The graffito was a piece of luck, but the heron had obviously read it. See next photo Image]

St Ann's church, Stretford
A view from the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal. The church http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-212972-church-of-st-ann-stretford , and the presbytery http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-212973-st-ann-s-presbyery-stretford in front of the tower, were designed in the 1860s by E W Pugin, son of the more famous A W N Pugin.
