Cheviot Street, Manchester
A lot of these rather down-at-heel streets look upon the shiny new towers going up in the city centre and might wonder if any of that money will ever find its way to them.

26-32 Southall Street, Manchester
The nearer building, bearing the name "Imperial Works" at the top looks early C20th. It was empty at the time and has since been demolished (probably this Image]). Globe House follows, Victorian, and now flats.

The Philanthropic Hall, Manchester
This building is on the corner of Southall Street and Carnarvon Street, near Strangeways Prison. Back in the 1930s it was built by the Jewish community as a soup kitchen for the poor in the area (regardless of their faith). More recently it has been a costume jewellery warehouse, and currently it is the home of Asian Sound Radio. The date above the door is shown in conventional form, and according to the Hebrew calendar.

Strangeways Prison, Southall Street, Manchester
In a different context, Alfred Waterhouse's original gatehouse could perhaps be seen as not particularly prison-like. Built 1866-68. Grade II listed.
