Patricroft Shed coaling tower
This is a standard LMS coaling tower probably installed in the 1930s to replace more primitive means of coaling locomotives. This is the 2-road version as would be needed for a large shed; I suspect the majority were single road. Coal wagons would be hoisted up the right-hand slope and then their contents tipped into the bunker in the body of the tower. Locomotive tenders and bunkers could then be filled from the tower bunker. Here Stanier 8F 48170 is being coaled.

Patricroft Shed scene
BR Standard 5 4-6-0 73125 awaits its next duty. 73125 was one of 30 (of 172 total) built fitted with Caprotti valve gear. This system uses rotary cams driving poppet valves rather having piston valves as with more conventional designs such as Stephenson's or Walschaerts'. Behind is the coaling tower - 48170 seen in Image has now been coaled and moved forward.

Disused platforms, new catenary, Patricroft railway station
The sections of platform at the eastern end of the station are now out of use to the public. That is in contrast with the brand new catenary, which is in the process of being brought into full service for passengers.
