Train leaving Walkden station
A service from Wigna Wallgate to Manchester Victoria is leaving. The signalbox is the only one on the Atherton line to normally be manned. It is planned to be abolished, together with those at Atherton and Crow Next Junction (Hindley) in 2013.

Walkden railway station
Smartened up since my last visit in 1989 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/823728, though the platforms remain a bleak, windy place to wait for a train.

Walkden station booking office revisited
Since my last visit in 1989 (23 years previously!) http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/823734 the wooden booking office has been treated less than sympathetically, but the airiness of the structure remains. The photo was taken hand-held without flash. Unlike Atherton station, Walkden was not manned on a Saturday afternoon, though the conspicuous ticket machine was available for use.
