The Original And Genuine M62
This section of motorway between the M60/M62/M602 junction and Worsley is one of the oldest in the UK. It's the original M62 between Worsley (the junction on the signs) and the A56 at Sale. When built, it was a hugely important boost for Manchester's transport network with a vital extra crossing of the then-busy Ship Canal which need not be shut for the passage of each vessel. When the Liverpool-Hull motorway was built in the 1970s it gained the M62 designation and the original M62 was renumbered M63, except for the short section in view. With the belated completion of Manchester's motorway ring almost 20 years later the good old M62 was renumbered in its entirety to M60. It is still a critical link in the motorway network: all praise to the men of Lancashire who saw the need and acted!
