Alliance House, in "eclectic style", wrote Pevsner, hedging his bets. Built as insurance offices, 1901, by Heathcote & Rawle. Lots of gabled dormers and the obligatory corner turret, topped by a domed cupola. Grade II listed.

St Ann's Square
A tulip-shaped fountain in front of Barclays Bank. I've been informed that the bank building was "Manchester Liners House". From 1922-1969, it was the HQ of a cargo and passenger shipping company, founded in 1898. The company moved to new premises in Salford Docks in 1969. Update: The fountain is not in fact a tulip, but a cotton bud. The Cotton Bud Fountain was commissioned by Manchester City Council in 1996. Seven sculptors were invited to submit designs in a limited competition. The winner was Peter Randall-Page. The light red granite stone selected for the bud echoes the red sandstone of St Ann’s church. The fountain was completed in June 1996 and was officially switched on by then Leader of the Opposition, Tony Blair. Fortunately, it was undamaged by the IRA bomb which devastated this part of the city in the same month.
