Manchester Central Library
Manchester Central Library is a circular building, south of the extended Town Hall (the spire of which can be seen towards the right hand side of this picture). The library, which is a Grade II Listed Building, was constructed between 1930 and 1934, but because of its traditional neoclassical design, many people mistakenly believe that it is much older.
The most obvious difference between this view, taken from Oxford Street in May 1976, and more recent views (http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=19066955&displayclass=thumbs ) is the absence of the Metrolink tramway which opened here in July 1992.

Central Library, St Peter's Square, Manchester
One of Manchester's most iconic buildings. Built 1930-34. The architects' competition was won by E. Vincent Harris whose portfolio featured many bland civic buildings, but here excelled himself. Steel frame clad in Portland stone with a Tuscan colonnade (of Sienna scagliola) running round the whole building and an imposing Corinthian portico. At the top a glass domed lights the circular reading room inside. Grade II* listed.
On the right is a sliver of Harris's town hall extension, and poking above is the top of the tower of Waterhouse's original building.
The library is closed for extensive refurbishment, not due to re-open until 2013. As well as maintenance, it is being re-organised inside - the council's website includes the ominous line "more room for new services and attractions". Books are clearly not enough of an attraction.

Manchester Central Library
The library was designed by E. Vincent Harris and constructed between 1930 and 1934. It takes the form of a neoclassical rotunda, with a Tuscan colonnade in Portland stone, low pitched leaded roof and a two-storey, five-bay Corinthian portico entrance. The library building is grade II* but is actually closed at the moment for refurbishment and expansion.
