The Church Inn and 38 Church Lane
The Church Inn stands at the end of Church Lane, in the shadow of the 13th century Parish Church of St Mary. It is the oldest public house in Prestwich; the present building dates from the eighteenth century but a previous inn on the site dates back at least as far back as 1629 although it is rumoured that it may have its origins as early as the 14th century. The neighbouring graveyard houses a stone for the family of 17th century innkeeper, Thomas Collier, whose children perished from a plague in 1641. The Church Inn (the white building) is Grade II-listed (Historic England List Entry Number: 1067251 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1067251 ) as is the adjoining (brown brick) house which has the name “CHURCH INN” on the gable wall (Historic England List Entry Number: 1356814 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1356814 ). The inn is reputedly haunted (https://www.burytimes.co.uk/news/18644215.haunted-history-hidden-secrets-church-inn-prestwich/ The Bury Times).

Eyesore on Church Drive, Prestwich
Stark modern accommodation blocks tower over adjacent houses and gardens and provide a jarring visual contrast with the mellow brick and stone of the neighbourhood. Ghastly!
