Cited by Pevsner as a "good example of this architect's skill at handling corner sites", in this case John Dalton Street. This architect was Charles Heathcote. Red sandstone above granite. Probably of a similar date to its near neighbour, also by Heathcote: Image
It appears to be known as De Quincey House because Thomas de Quincey was born in a house on this site in 1785.
To the fore, in Albert Square, is a statue of a former Bishop of Manchester, James Fraser (1888, by Thomas Woolner). Grade II listed.
