Waldorf House, Cooper Street, Manchester
A particularly rich confection whose facade, Pevsner thought, was too crowded, and whose details "fail to cohere". Us lesser mortals can probably just say, "ooh that's nice". Venetian Gothic, with ranks of paired windows, pilasters, statues in niches, all crowned by a richly-carved shallow pediment itself topped by a female figure (Image]). It was built by W. Mangnall in 1863 for the Freemasons and hence the facade incorporates Masonic emblems (apparently, I wouldn't know, they won't have me). Grade II listed. It is now offices, with a bar in the basement I believe. I have heard that it was partly owned by George Best in the 1960s when it was a restaurant.

Manchester buildings from St Peter's Square
A bright winter morning brings out the contrast in colour and style of buildings on Princess Street and Mosley Street behind. The tram line cables are in the foreground. Viewpoint is the tram station at St Peter's Square.

73-75 Princess Street, Manchester
Florid Victorian Gothic affair, by Ernest Bates, 1868. Polychromatic brick, diapering, and a corbelled cornice. Unusually restrained skyline for such a building and, even more unusually for a corner building, it lacks a tower or turret. Grade II listed.

Manchester, City Arms
Good Beer Guide-listed pub on Kennedy Street, near the town hall. Two entrances - left, through a tiled passage with hatch, or right, direct into the front bar. Central counter with two rooms, with leather banquettes. Fine glass windows, old photos and drinking homilies on the walls. Eight cask ales on offer at my visit.
