A Walk in Didsbury Village (30) Barlow Moor Road west
Looking down Barlow Moor Road we see that The Nelson pub is named after Lord Nelson, the admiral, and a "Credit Union Free House". One can glimpse a small shop further down which announces ALTERATIONS and a sign depicting a sewing machine. These useful shops used to be much more common when clothes had to last a long time, a man's suit possibly for life. There has been a recent upsurge of interest in carrying out repairs to clothing rather than throwing it away, perhaps an attempt to capture some of the lost skills which throwaway clothes brought about. Or perhaps a part of a current trend. Has this shop always been there, an indicator of the commonsense and perhaps thrift of local people? On the left, looking down the road one can see several more planted flower troughs in bloom and trees outside another row of shops. On the right larger trees offer shade and a sense of a real green environment.
