Substation switchgear and transformer
Detail of the substation at Image On the left is the 6KV switchgear (isolator and grounding switch). On the right is the oil-filled transformer with its cooling system looking like old cast iron radiators. The oil circulates by natural convection.

6KV switchgear
The HV side of substation switchgear is often complex. A typical system will resemble a T switch, allowing the local transformer to be fed from one of two feeds, or bypassed altogether. This one is typical. If it looks daunting, it is. No-one is allowed to operate equipment like this without very specific training. On occasion older equipment like this has to be replaced not because it is faulty, but because the manufacturer no longer exists to give such training or provide spares.
