Once a hub of heavy engineering, Gorton was in terminal decline in 1989. Just visible at the bridge is the junction off to the right, taking freight round the south side of Manchester to Trafford Park.

Gorton railway station
Opened in 1906 by the Great Central Railway on its line from Manchester to Sheffield via Woodhead, this station replaced an earlier one that would have been located just beyond the bridge in the distance. View west towards Ashburys and Manchester.
