Former Odeon, Oxford Street, Manchester
Restrained exterior with flush, fluted pilasters. Built c1930 by F.T. Verity & S. Beverly. The cinema closed in 2004 since when it has apparently suffered from considerable vandalism while attempts to list it have been rejected by English Heritage. In 2010 permission was granted for its demolition.

Lost forever!
The Odeon - once one of Manchester's premier city centre cinemas - opened as a Paramount Theatre in 1930 and was renamed 'Odeon' in 1940 when acquired by the Group of that name. Through changing times, it eventually became a 7 screen multiplex in 1992, but failed to survive against strong competition and closed in 2004. Its original Wurlitzer Organ was moved to the Free Trade Hall and later to Stockport Town Hall. Other internal features had been damaged or stripped out over the years such that it failed to achieve Listed Building status and was subsequently sold for property development. Thus, a generation of Manchester film-goers has lost a favourite venue.
