Hotel Piccadilly, Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester
Viewed from this angle, an exciting juxtaposition of angles and projections, but less successful from other angles from which it can appear slightly incoherent and messy. Below the hotel, projecting towards Piccadilly Gardens, is the restaurant with coloured glass and curious blocky protuberances. Below is a more conventional podium. The hotel is one of three buildings comprising the massive Piccadilly Plaza development by Covell, Matthews & Partners, 1959-65. Another, the tower, can be seen behind Image The three are linked by a podium. (Or were, as one of the three, Bernard House, was demolished in 2003).
