Hardy's Well: An apostrophe conundrum
Dating from at least 1837 and originally known as the Birch Villas it was renamed after the Hardy's Crown Brewery of Hulme. It was owned by Enterprise Inns before closing in 2016. Original plans by the new owners involved demolishing the pub and building a new six storey apartment block containing 26 flats and ground-floor shops. Now it seems the old frontage will be incorporated into the new build.
The pub's name is signed above the doors as Hardy's Well with the apostrophe placed after the "y". The brewery name at the top of the building as spelt out in mosaic panels reads HARDYS' with the apostrophe after the "S".

Wilmslow Road
The A6010 turns right here into Dickenson Road. Ahead is the B5117, Wilmslow Road, known as the Curry Mile. On the corner is Hardy's Well.
